25 January 2022, Bangkok – Ms. Wipattra Totemchokchaikarn, a Foresight Researcher at FutureTales Lab by MQDC, gave an interview on “7 Megatrends and 5 Scenarios for Bangkok and Its Surrounding in 2050” to City Cracker, a website focused on the digital age.

MQDC, the property developer within DTGO, supports FutureTales Lab to help Thailand and the world foresee and overcome our future challenges.

“These research projects focus on Bangkok and its surroundings and the EEC region, an area of 150 square kilometers,” said Ms. Totemchokchaikarn.

“The main framework has 3 elements. First is about people in terms of sustain, live, work, learn, play. Next is the main structure of city and mobility. Third is about nature and biodiversity, considering how the environment and biodiversity will be.”

The research team used a tool called “look back to look forward” to look at society, technology, the economy, the environment, policies, attitudes, thoughts and beliefs. They then examined the present for signs of change that will impact city futures in 2050.

The research delivered “7 Megatrends and 5 Scenarios” on how cities may change:

7 Megatrends of Future Cities

5 Scenarios for Futures Cities
1. Technotopia – Autonomous driving brings travels through regions, communal engagement, increasing technology, technology development of big companies for using technology more.
2. Urban Playgrounds – All ages see the importance of health. City development will feature areas for people to exercise and look after their health.
3. Decentralized Resilience – Environmental issues such as floods, rising sea levels, or climate change may lead people to abandon Bangkok.
4. Transforming Lifestyles – Change in lifestyles and green, health-focused tourism will drive a “Green Mega City” strategy to relax both body and mind.
5. Accelerated Generations – A revolution in education, skill development of older workers, including urban development that balances the environment and other elements.
“Our research is published for the public so any organization can use it, including the company. The future scenarios we aim to pass on too,” said Ms. Totemchokchaikarn.

“We are actively involved in and developing some projects that must happen, not only in future scenarios but in reality. We intend to provide recommendations for city developers, policymakers, and the general public.”
