27 June 2018, Bangkok – MQDC will lead the property development sector in tackling plastic waste by ‘upcycling’ litter collected by chemicals company PTT Global Chemical Public Company Ltd (GC).

The partnership, also involving Kasetsart University (KU), Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT), and the Research & Innovation for Sustainability Center (RISC), was announced at RISC’s headquarters at Magnolias Ratchadamri Boulevard (MRB).

“MQDC is committed to finding new uses for plastic waste in all our projects,” said MQDC CEO Mr Visit Malaisirirat.

“The innovative upcycled new materials will help address Thailand’s plastic waste challenge by giving it valuable new uses, with no risk of re-entering the environment, a strategy in line with our principle of ‘sustainnovation for all well-being’ – for humans, animals, and the planet. We are the first property developer to engage in upcycling plastic waste on this scale anywhere in the world.”

RISC’s Chief Advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Singh Intrachooto, will bring experience to the project from leading the development of upcycling labels in Thailand and heading the Creative Center for Eco-Design at KU Architecture (Scrap Lab).

“Upcycling means giving waste new, enhanced uses and this can be a valuable part of solving Thailand’s plastic waste crisis, although we recognize that the issue requires wider changes in consumption and waste management,” he said.

“Under this collaboration, GC will work with communities to increase awareness of plastic waste management and to develop a value chain for supplying plastic waste. KU, RISC, RMUTT, and GC’s innovation center and Customer Solution Center (CSC) will work on innovative ways to upcycle waste. MQDC will then incorporate this into its property developments. Together, we are opening a significant new route to take plastic waste out of the environment and protect vulnerable ecosystems.”
